2002: The World
Still Needs Min Yasui Min Yasui was a giant of a community leader in Denver, but more
importantly a giant of a civil rights pioneer nationally. We could use
his leadership today, when the injustices of 60 years ago seem to be
repeating.
16 December,
2002: Recharging
through Community Some thoughts on the importance of Japantowns, Little Tokyos
and even "Tiny Tokyos" for preserving a sense of JA community.
9 December,
2002: The Games
(Asian) People Play I have vivid memories of games from when I was growing up in
Japan. I was reminded of them when I recently played Hanafuda, a card
game, with Erin's family.
2 December,
2002: Crazy for
Kaki I'm just about sick of kaki, a fruit I grew up eating in Japan,
because I've had it every day for a month. It's a good thing I love
them so much.
25 November,
2002: The Importance
of Remembering Internment After attending the Japanese American National Museum's All-Camp
Summit, I realize the importance of remembering -- and talking about
-- internment.
21 October,
2002: Racism Comes
in Costume for Trick or Treat Even though it's hip to be Asian, and especially Japanese, these
days, I was reminded how racism lurks just beneath the surface of a
civil society. This time it showed up in the guise of a Hallowe'en costume.
15 October,
2002: Spotlight
on China on the Silver Screen The Denver International Film Festival is showcasing Chinese
cinema this week. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience the richness
of China's history, culture and contemporary society. I hope someday
Japanese cinema gets the spotlight too.
10 October,
2002: Anime Nation Attending an anime festival made me realize how Japanese animation
is helping to build bridges Japan and the U.S. -- at least, with obsessed
fans of various series and movies.
18 September,
2002: Toshiro
Mifune: Top Sword After watching a marathon of Toshiro Mifune samurai movies,
I can understand where the late comedian John Belushi got the inspiration
for one of his most popular characters on "Saturday Night Live."
Mifune practically created the image we have today of the samurai warrior.
9 September,
2002: Getting
in the Swing of Golf I've never been interested in golf -- but I learned a lot about
the game by volunteering at the local JA community's annual "Go
for Bokre" tournament.
2 September,
2002: Will Colorado
Send an Asian to Congress? Stan Matsunaka isn't acting very Asian as he campaigns for a
seat in the US Congress -- and that's a good thing.
24 August, 2002:
Dreaming of Dragon
Boats It's been a week since the Colorado Dragon Boat Festival, but
I'm still dreaming bout Dragon Boats.
27 July, 2002:
History MIS-ing
in Action The history of the Japanese American soldiers of the Military
Intelligence Service during WWII is finally becoming better-known.
24 June, 2002:
Art from the Heart Junko Chodos had to leave Japan to pursue her art, but Japan
is an intrinsic part of her art and her life. I interviewed Chodos for
an exhibit coming to Boulder.
15 June, 2002:
Noodling Around It's summertime, which means I can eat one of my favosite seasonal
Japanese noodle dishes, hiyashi chuka soba. Asian cultures all share
noodles in their cuisine, and I realized I love all of them.
3 June, 2002:
A Cinematic Tour
of Asia -- and APA Culture The Aurora Asian Film Festival was a terrific way to learn about
different Asian cultures through film, food and cultural performances.
But not enough Asians attended films about other cultures other than
their own.
19 May, 2002:
Is the JACL's
Apology Too Late? The Japanese American Citizens League made an unprecedented
public apology May 11 -- for something that happened almost 60 years
ago. But will the apology heal the wound within the JA community?
7 May, 2002:
Aikido Hurts So
Good Learning aikido is a great experience, although I'm in constant
pain. I never knew that martial arts could hurt so good!
30 April, 2002:
Putting the APA
Perspective on Stage We were lucky enough to catch a performance by an LA-based APA
theater troupe called hereandnow. Colorado could use more cultural experiences
like this!
24 April, 2002:
When the Shirt
Hits the Fans Chalk one up for the good guys: Asian American organizations
were able to convince Abercrombie & Fitch, the popular youth clothing
retailer, to pull off the market a series of T-shirts featuring offensive
images of Asians.
16 April, 2002:
Asians in the
News Asian students at Colorado College helped protest a racist issue
of the school newspaper, but they remained invisible in the media. Why
are Asians so quiet?
9 April, 2002:
War of the Words Maybe I'm being too sensitive about wanting eBay's sellers to
stop using "Jap" as an abbreviation for "Japan."
But I don't think so.
2 April, 2002:
The Vampire Ronin "Blade II" ain't "Seven Samurai," but it's
a samurai movie, nonetheless!
25 March, 2002:
Asians and Oscars I'm so thrilled that Halle Berry and Denzel Washington won the
top acting awards at the Academy Awards, but I wonder when the same
will happen with Asian actors.
19 March, 2002:
A Magazine for
All Asians? A magazine, which was one of the few publications to serve a
broad Asian Pacific American readership, has folded. Can any magazine
represent all APIs?
11 March, 2002:
Kwan's Quandary A Seattle newspaper forgot that Michelle Kwan is American, and
a new book project is tracking down Japanese American high school valedictorians
from the 1920s and '30s who knew what it felt like to have their American
birthright forgotten.
4 March, 2002:
So Happa Together... A discussion about keeping Japanese Americans' blood "pure"

and Lost Youth A documentary I recently watched called "Children of the
Camps" moved me to tears as it explored the scars left on Japaese
Americans who were interned as youths.
29 January,
2002: How Japanese
Am I? Sometimes I have to be reminded that I'm not as Japanese as
I think I am, and wonder about what it means to be Japanese American.
21 January,
2002: Wrestling
with Technology Last night I wrestled with the computer and won a round. This
morning the PC fought back. Asians are supposed to be early adopters
of technology, but that wasn't always the case with me.
14 January,
2002: Benihana
Memories A new "teppan-yaki" style restaurant opened nearby,
and it reminded me of the days when my family used to celebrate special
times at Benihana.
7 January, 2002:
Soy to the World It's shocking how much soy a person can eat if you put your
mind to it -- both in Japanese food and "yuppie" health food.
31 December,
2001: Engurish
Lessons The amount of English used in Japan is incredible -- even if
some of it doesn't make any sense at all.
17 December,
2001: Family Values,
JA Style Musings on family values from my Japanese American upbringing
to the JA community and the effects of divorce. This column was originally

to a Beatle I'm feeling guilty because George Harrison was never my favorite
Beatle.
26 November,
2001: Kurisumasu
Memories My childhood Christmas memories are different from the all-American
image of "A Christmas Story." But then, Christmas in Japan
is different, period.
